Abstract
Scoliopteryginae Herrich-Schäffer, [1852] Scoliopteryginae are an ill-defined assemblage, with at least 140 species in 12 genera, centered around the holarctic genus Scoliopteryx, comprising S. libatrix (well-known for its cave-dwelling habits, Bouvet et al. 1974, McKillop 1993). The subfamily includes species that are affiliated with the type genus either because of genetic relatedness or superficial resemblance. These include Ossonoba and the Anomis group of genera (Rusicada, Gonitis, Anomis). Numerous other genera such as Falana, Savara, Oxygonitis, Lineopalpa, and Arthisma may also be scoliopterygines (Holloway 2005). Many species share with Calpinae the labial palp configuration and fruit-feeding habits, though they lack the specialized erectile barbs and tearing hooks of the typical calpine proboscis. They are distributed worldwide but are most abundant in the intertropical zone. Members of the Anomis flava group are economically important pests on cotton (Deguine 1991).
