Abstract
The article is devoted to the issue of baptism of Rus-Ukraine in the context of research and archaeological excavations on the Postal Square in Kyiv, where historical monuments of XI - XII centuries have been found, which testify to the location of the medieval coastal city quarter in this area for the further establishment of the Museum the status of a monument of national importance. The events that preceded the baptism and appearance of St. Michael's Golden-domed Shrine by the first Metropolitan of Kyiv, holy hierarch Michael, in connection with the events related with the baptism of Rus under the equally apostolic Prince Volodymyr the Great in 988 – 992 are covered. The work of the Abbot Theodosius Sofonovich "Chronicle of the Ancient Chroniclers" is briefly described, which tells about the baptism of Kyivans and the removal of idols from the Mikhailivska Mountain. On the one hand, the importance of Feodosiy Sophonovich's figure is shown, as the author of the Chronicle, and on the other, as the abbot of St. Michael's Monastery, who has shown himself to be a scientist, an educated person, an energetic administrator, relying on the support of the hetman’s administration, the highest church hierarchy, tried to strengthen the role of the monastery as a cultural center. The information has been given about the first Metropolitan of Kyiv, holy hierarch Michael, who was wise and quiet, albeit strict in matters of faith, performing his gracious service in the State of Kyiv and conducting an equally apostolic activity, building temples and founding monasteries in the work of establishing Christians. Testimonies of sources of St. Michael's Golden-domed Monastery foundation are analyzed and the statements of the researchers regarding the place and time of baptism of Kyiv are given. Conclusions have been made regarding the findings that were discovered during archaeological excavations at Kyiv Postal Square, in the context of their direct relation, if not to the very site of the Baptism, but to the events that were associated with it. Specifically, it is about dropping idols from the Mikhailivska Hill, which mentions the road by which they were brought down.
