En arrivant sur la scène montréalaise en 1875, Guillaume Couture cherche à créer un espace discursif où les débats d’idées pourraient se libérer des emprises commerciales qui les ont investis depuis les années 1830. Il fait valoir sa conception du bon goût et de la musique, une « musique savante » qui se réclame des Beaux-Arts, de ce qui relève de l’inspiration et du génie, destinée à être consommée comme un plaisir raffiné, et qui considère en revanche les arts populaires comme vulgaires et rattachés au divertissement. Couture s’investit donc d’un ethos de pamphlétaire. Il s’adresse aux lecteurs à partir d’un lieu de vérité, il pourfend l’imposture dominante dans un monde où le faux se fait passer pour le vrai, il adopte le rôle du justicier pourvu d’une mission sanitaire et se fait défenseur de « l’artiste inconnu et incompris ». Il importe ses idées et ses manières de faire des pamphlétaires français. C’est alors un modèle disruptif sur la scène montréalaise. Mais la culture est différente et on accepte moins facilement le discours agonique. L’article attribue à Guillaume Couture la plume d’un certain Rapin, en présentant une polémique avec le pianiste viennois Gustave Satter, qui expose les stratégies rhétoriques employées pour s’opposer au commerce musical, dans le Montréal de 1880.
