Abstract
Cet article réaffirme l’importance de l’exercice biographique en histoire culturelle québécoise et propose une première mise en récit de la vie de la compositrice Albertine Caron-Legris (1894-1972). À 45 ans, Caron-Legris quitte sa Louiseville natale pour poursuivre un baccalauréat en composition au Conservatoire National de musique de Montréal. Elle signe près de 70 compositions pour piano, voix et piano-voix et collabore avec plusieurs figures centrales du régionalisme littéraire (incluant Blanche Lamontagne-Beauregard, Félix-Antoine Savard et Claude-Henri Grignon) et de la promotion de la chanson canadienne-française (dont Marius Barbeau, Charles-Émile Gadbois, Eugène Lapierre, Albert Viau et Olivette Lamontagne). Cherchant à éviter les tropes exceptionnalistes de l’historiographie des femmes en musique, cet article ancre la mise en récit dans la matérialité d’archives conservées dans le fonds privé de Caron-Legris : son journal de pensionnaire, deux cahiers de réflexions issus de périodes distinctes de sa vie adulte, un scrapbook consignant les événements marquants de sa carrière, et 52 retailles de papier annotées à la main à partir desquelles des fragments de sa fin de vie peuvent être reconstitués. Par la mise en dialogue des archives de l’intime et de la presse numérisée, l’article reconstruit l’univers social et artistique de la compositrice tout en mettant en relief les avancées et les limites de la professionnalisation, de la promotion et de la diffusion de la musique dans la première moitié du xx e siècle au Québec.
