L’article se penche sur la dernière des Soirées-Mathieu, qui s’est tenue le 17 mars 1952. Ce type de soirée avait été lancé par Rodolphe Mathieu au début des années 1930 et se voulait un carrefour favorisant le débat d’idées en lien avec la modernité artistique, le tout augmenté d’un concert. Qu’en est-il plusieurs années plus tard alors que c’est le fils, André Mathieu, qui pense l’événement et se place au coeur de celui-ci ? Le débat proposé pour cette ultime soirée porte le titre « Théâtre d’hier et d’aujourd’hui » et des personnalités influentes dans le Québec des années 1950 sont mises à l’honneur, par exemple Jean Bruchési. Bien que composées à la fin des années 1940, les oeuvres choisies par André Mathieu constituent un choix de programmation témoignant de sa vision artistique. C’est ainsi que les pièces d’archive de l’époque, notamment les critiques publiées par Maurice Huot à La Patrie et Jean Vallerand au Devoir , permettent de mesurer la réception médiatique de l’événement et de voir en quoi il a constitué un dernier moment de grâce pour André dans sa réception québécoise. Son Trio , qu’il prend soin de placer en conclusion de la soirée, est salué comme l’oeuvre phare du programme. Mis en lien avec ses écrits de l’époque, il constitue la pierre angulaire de la vision artistique qu’il prône durant cette période et qui trouve écho dans la Soirée-Mathieu du 17 mars 1952. L’événement invite donc à reconsidérer la vision de la modernité musicale que les Mathieu ont défendue, Rodolphe en son temps au nom d’une expression individuelle, puis André, à la fin des années 1940, au nom d’un romantisme moderne. De même, le réseau de soutien derrière la soirée du 17 mars 1952 retient l’attention quant au positionnement idéologique qu’il met en lumière, les Mathieu montrant leur accointance avec le nationalisme et le conservatisme de l’époque.
