Im Winter werden die meisten Mutterkühe in Kanada auf begrenzten Weideflächen ohne Stall gehalten. Mit tierbasierten Indikatoren wurde die Wirkung eines neuen umweltfreundlichen Konzepts zur Winterweidehaltung auf die Anpassungsfähigkeit von Mutterkühen und Färsen unter kontinentalen Winterklimabedingungen untersucht. Über zwei Winterperioden wurden jeweils zwei Tiergruppen auf einer begrenzten Weidefläche mit Windschutzwänden und einem überdachten und betonierten Fress- und Tränkebereich gehalten. Die individuelle Wasseraufnahme, das Liegeverhalten mittels ALT-Pedometer sowie die Konzentration an Cortisolmetaboliten im Kot wurden unter zum Teil extremen Klimabedingungen bis -40 °C erfasst. Anhand der Ergebnisse der Indikatoren konnte belegt werden, dass die Mutterkühe ethologisch durch eine Veränderung des Liegeverhaltens, aber nicht physiologisch mit einer Änderung in der Konzentration an Kotcortisolmetaboliten und des notwendigen Wasserbedarfs auf die zunehmende Kälte reagierten.
