Abstract
L’article analyse la représentation des interactions communicatives entre voyageurs européens et peuples autochtones dans le Voyage en Amérique de Chateaubriand. En examinant plusieurs récits de voyage du xviii e siècle et des premières années du xix e siècle, sur lesquels l’écrivain a fondé son texte, cet article se concentre sur deux situations récurrentes étroitement liées : l’apprentissage des langues autochtones par les voyageurs européens et l’interaction linguistique entre les voyageurs et les peuples autochtones. L’article démontre que Chateaubriand ne se représente pas comme un voyageur capable de communiquer directement avec les Autochtones. Cependant, la seule scène où l’on trouve une interaction directe entre le voyageur français et une femme autochtone offre une perspective inédite sur la relation complexe entre réalité et littérature dans les récits de voyage romantiques.
