Si l’on connaît dans la fiction classique des récits d’apprentissage linguistique scolaire, la rencontre et l’apprentissage, en situation, de la langue de l’autre semblent plus souvent esquivés. Quand la question de la langue est posée, celle de son apprentissage est contournée, comme si raconter dans une langue comment on en apprend une autre n’était pas chose si aisée. On se propose ici, par un parcours à travers des genres, des siècles et des aires culturelles diverses, de partir en quête d’un topos « apprendre la langue de l’autre » dont l’absence, puis la lente émergence témoignent de la nature éminemment historique, imposant la nécessité d’une topique historicisée.
