Duurzame productie betekent dat, naast eisen ten aanzien van het sociale gedrag, een bedrijf dient te voldoen aan de eisen die het milieu stelt. Dat wil zeggen uitval en afval beperken en vervuiling voorkomen. Dit kan gerealiseerd worden door technologieveranderingen, herontwerp van producten en processen, het toepassen van altematieve materialen en hergebruik van afgedankte producten. Het streven naar duurzame productie moet vooral economisch worden benaderd. Waarom grondstoffen en materialen verspillen als productiemethoden kunnen worden toegepast, waardoor dit wordt voorkomen en er bovendien goedkoper en effectiever gewerkt kan worden? Verspilling wordt steeds duurder en is daarmee een belangrijk argument voor duurzaam produceren. In dit hoofdstuk komen aan bod: technologieverandering, duurzaam ontwerpen, het verbeteren van de operationele activiteiten en hergebruik.
