Abstract
Van şehri, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun taşradaki önemli merkezlerinden biriydi. XIX. yüzyılda Van şehrini birçok Batılı seyyah ziyaret etmiştir. Bu çalışma Van'ın şehir tarihine katkı sağlamak amacıyla XIX. yüzyıl Batı seyahatnamelerinden yararlanılarak hazırlanmıştır. Çalışmada seyahatnamelerin yanı sıra XIX. yüzyıl Van tarihi üzerine yapılmış araştırmalardan istifade edilmiştir. Bu çalışma beş bölümden meydana gelmektedir. Birinci bölümde Van'ın coğrafi yapısı anlatılmaktadır. İkinci bölümde Van'ın idari yapısı ele alınmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde Van'da sosyal ve kültürel yaşam anlatılmaktadır. Dördüncü bölümde Van'ın ekonomik yapısı yer almaktadır. Beşinci bölümde ise Van'ın tarihi yapılarından bahsedilmektedir. Neticede seyahatnamelerde yer alan bilgiler diğer araştırmalarla karşılaştırılarak çoğunlukla tutarlı sonuçlar elde edilmiştir.
