Cet article propose une relecture de l’histoire du déterminisme à partir de l’épistémologie historique de Gaston Bachelard. Trois régimes se distinguent : le déterminisme universel de la physique classique, fondé sur l’unité du temps, de la causalité et des substances ; le déterminisme mathématique de la relativité, qui pluralise les perspectives en inscrivant la causalité dans la structure formelle de l’espace-temps ; et le déterminisme technique de la mécanique quantique, où probabilité et phénoménotechnique deviennent les opérateurs d’une rationalité nouvelle. L’analyse bachelardienne permet ainsi de dépasser l’alternative entre déterminisme et indéterminisme : la mécanique quantique ne réfute pas le déterminisme, mais en redéfinit la signification, en l’arrimant à la production technique des phénomènes et à une ontologie discontinue des événements. En retraçant ce passage du démon de Laplace au chat de Schrödinger, l’article met en évidence le rôle des ruptures épistémologiques dans la constitution du « nouvel esprit scientifique », où la notion de déterminisme se réinvente en fonction des transformations conceptuelles et expérimentales de la physique moderne.
