L’article cherche à identifier dès la première modernité une réflexion sur la précarité du savoir qui ne présuppose pas de penser les limites de notre connaissance comme la preuve de notre imperfection constitutive. Il s’agit de suivre la construction d’une nouvelle configuration du savoir qui institue le probable comme un régime possible du savoir. Au coeur de ce régime, il faut distinguer le probabilisme de la Royal Society et le vertige épistémique qu’éprouvent les savants pris entre instabilité possible du monde et nouvel ordre du savoir. L’article cherche à suivre différentes conceptualisations de cette incertitude en mettant en regard Boyle et Cavendish, puis Leibniz et Wolff et les différentes attitudes épistémiques forgées pour y répondre.
