Abstract
Ethnic groups are defined in part by the thoughts and feelings each commits to silence. For people who leave their homeland, maintaining the silence that is part of their cultural identity is particularly trying. For the recently immigrated Japanese who were forcibly relocated to detention centers in Canada during the Second World War, new silences, those of exiles within their land of exile, were to overlap with those of their heritage, and shortly thereafter with the deliberate silence of their children, who were determined to become a part of the post-war Canadian culture even at the expense of their ethnic roots. It was left to the following generation, the paradoxically “intermediate” third generation, to separate the various layers and turn the silence that is viewed as a curse of history, victim to the vagaries of the times, into the resonance of an ethnic and personal past, and thereby a fundamental part of the individual’s search for identity. Through a mix of narrative fragments and evocations of the past, this is the exploration Joy Kogawa poignantly pursues in Obasan.
