Abstract
As part of the Highways Agency's requirements for the construction of the A21 Lamberhurst Bypass, the Heritage Network was commissioned by May Gurney Construction, to undertake a programme of targeted archaeological investigation of key Cultural Heritage areas identified along the road corridor. These investigations form Phase 2 of three phases of archaeological work carried out under the construction contract. The five defined areas include the two points along the new road corridor, which cross the medieval pale of Scotney Park, Ruffetts Old Quarry, Piercefield Shaw Quarry and the Scotney Castle drive. A total of eight trenches and six test pits were excavated over the five areas. Profiles of the park pale were found but not dating evidence was recorded. The excavations in Ruffetts Old Quarry showed that the quarry was opened for the purpose of extracting sandstone. No evidence survives to reveal the extraction methods employed. The excavations in Piercefield Shaw Quarry showed that the quarry was opened for the purpose of extracting Wadhurst clay. No evidence survives to reveal the extraction methods employed. The excavations across the Scotney Castle drive revealed that a cutting was excavated and an embankment built to provide a level base for the road surface. No evidence that stone from the ruination of the old castle was used in the drive's construction was observed
