Abstract
Our understanding of migration within North America has for years been one of two countries, Canada and the United States, receiving migrants from the third, Mexico. So large have been the flows of Mexicans to the United States that they have transformed the economies of many American cities along with the social structures of their neighbourhoods and the language in both home and public contexts, and the large proportion of undocumented migration has given rise to a profound militarization of the border that separates the two countries. But more recently, owing to the growth in the Mexican economy combined with the effects on US jobs of the 2008 recession and the dramatic rise in deportations by the Obama administration, we have seen a partial reversal of flows from the US to Mexico and a significant growth in migration from Latin American countries to Mexico, either for employment there or as a transit station to the United States.
