Malgré des décennies de recherche sur l'orogénie de Grenville datant du Mésoprotérozoïque tardif au Néoprotérozoïque précoce, des aspects essentiels, tels que l'âge du début de la collision continentale et la durée du métamorphisme, restent mal établis. Dans cette étude, j’intègre la pétrochronologie U-Th-Pb sur monazite et sur xénotime et la pétrochronologie Lu—Hf sur grenat avec des observations microtexturales détaillées, afin de contraindre l'évolution métamorphique des gneiss alumineux des domaines de Mékinac-Taureau, de Shawinigan et de Portneuf-SaintMaurice dans la région de la Mauricie, dans la partie centrale de la Province de Grenville au Québec. Trois stades métamorphiques distincts sont identifiés. Un stade prograde aux conditions métamorphiques du faciès des amphibolites liées au début de la collision continentale est enregistré dès 1137 ± 13 | 24 Ma, avant la phase Ottawan de l'orogénie du Grenville (environ 1090 Ma, tel que défini habituellement). Le pic métamorphique s'est produit pendant la phase Ottawan (vers 1100-1050 Ma) à des conditions suprasolidus au faciès des granulites dans les domaines de Mékinac-Taureau et de Shawinigan, les plus bas structuralement, et à des conditions subsolidus au faciès des amphibolites dans le domaine de Portneuf-Saint-Maurice, le plus haut structuralement. Le métamorphisme rétrograde et le refroidissement ont suivi à ≤1045 Ma et se sont poursuivis jusqu'à au moins ca. 980 Ma. Ces résultats témoignent d'une longue histoire métamorphique qui s'étend sur ~150 millions d'années, dont ~50 millions d'années de résidence au sein de la croûte moyenne à haute température. Cette évolution est compatible avec une orogenèse de collision continentale de longue durée. Mes nouvelles données ne s’intègrent pas facilement dans les modèles géodynamiques actuels. Les modèles futurs devront mieux prendre en compte l'évolution prolongée de l'orogenénie de Grenville qui a débuté vers 1137 ± 13 | 24 Ma—et son chevauchement temporel avec le développement d'un système de rift majeur à l'intérieur de Laurentia.
