Publié en 1570, augmenté de quatre récits en 1572, puis réédité à treize reprises jusqu’en 1606, ce volume marque une nouvelle étape dans la collection des Histoires tragiques inaugurée en 1559. François de Belleforest avait traduit et adapté dans les premiers volumes de la série des nouvelles empruntées au conteur italien Matteo Bandello. Il fait désormais appel à des sources très diverses pour composer douze nouvelles qui transportent le lecteur de la Scandinavie du haut Moyen Age à la France des guerres de religion, de l’Europe des Gibelins à l’Empire de Soliman le Magnifique, jusque sur les routes de Terre-Neuve et des Caraïbes. A l’époque où Montaigne écrit ses Essais, Belleforest donne une vision bigarrée de l’expérience humaine, envisagée sous ses aspects les plus tragiques: Gaston de Foix, «l’amazone» Vlasta, ou encore Hamlet - dont le Commingeois est le premier à conter l’histoire en langue vulgaire -, sont les acteurs d’un theatrum mundi mis en scène par un écrivain qui veut surprendre, émouvoir, et édifier. Livre d’Histoire et d’histoires, Le Cinquiesme Tome offre à ses lecteurs un «Discours memorable» où s’entrelacent récits légendaires, tableaux historiques, et événements contemporains.
