Abstract
Cette étude retrace la destinée du Romuleon, une compilation d’histoire antique dont l’original latin, rédigé entre 1361 et 1364 par Benvenuto da Imola, remporta un succès tel qu’il fut traduit à deux reprises en italien avant de l’être derechef en français, par Jean Miélot en 1460 et par Sébastien Mamerot à peine six ans plus tard. Chacune de ces versions fait l’objet d’un commentaire illustrant les modalités de diffusion et d’adaptation de l’historiographie romaine au terme du Moyen Age, mais c’est la traduction de Mamerot, récemment publiée chez Droz, qui est au cœur de l’ouvrage. Alors que les éléments de biographie de Louis de Laval, le destinataire, ainsi que de Sébastien Mamerot, son chapelain et le traducteur de l’œuvre, délimitent le cadre de production du Romuleon, l’étude de la tradition manuscrite et celle du programme iconographique exécuté par l’atelier des Colombe retracent les voies de sa réception. L’analyse des procédés et des stratégies de traduction complète une réflexion centrée sur le statut de la culture antique dans l’aristocratie française de la seconde moitié du XVe siècle.
