Le journal de Pierre de l'Estoile constitue, de l'avis général, le document le plus important et le plus curieux pour la connaissance historique et littéraire de la fin du XVIe siècle français. L'Estoile fournit un témoignage au jour le jour sur le Paris du règne du dernier des Valois. Pour la première fois, ce texte est édité d'après le manuscrit 6678 de la Bibliothèque Nationale, le seul a avoir été entièrement composé, revu et corrigé par l'auteur. Les éditeurs ont annoté soigneusement ce texte, à la lumière des travaux les plus récents.
