Evaluation of Adhesion Resistance of TiN, TiCN and CrN Films to Titanium

Abstract
The adhesion resistance of TiN, TiCN, CrN films against titanium were investigated. In the PVD method, TiN, TiCN and CrN were respectively deposited. A ball-on-disk friction tester was used to evaluate adhesion resistance. Ti balls were used in the friction test. After the friction test, the wear marks of the specimens were observed with an optical microscope. The presence or absence of adhesion was determined by optical micrographs. The average friction coefficient of TiCN film was as low as about 0.2, but the average friction coefficients of the other film was high at 0.6 or more due to the occurrence of adhesion. TiCN was less likely to adhere to titanium than TiN and CrN, with the best adhesion rate being 0.2 % and adhesion height being 0.3 µm.
