Abstract
A Level 1 standing building survey was carried out on 28 July 2025. A building pre-dating 1850 was constructed in sandstone on the junction of Bridgefield and Carron Water; the side walls are in red brick. At least 5 extensions were added over the late 19th-20th century when the building was in use as a joinery workshop - extensions in stone, shuttered concrete, concrete block and wood. The interior is wood lined and floors except the basement which has concrete floors. There are people in Stonehaven who worked at the business and some of them added information for this report and there is evidence of the joiners all over the wooden elements of the building where they have written their names. The property is interesting as it has only had four owners James Murray from 1832, Robert Thomson (joinery) from 1900, John A W Briggs, carpet sellers and now the current owner. Part of the shop was used as the office for the Stonehaven Provost in the 1890s (The Press and Journal 14.9.2022).
