Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

\nlors du scenario avec des failles imperméables.<br /><br />Gaspé Penin sula (Quebec, Canada) has hydrocarbon potential recognized for 150 years, and with
\ncurrent gas production in the east of the peninsula. A research program on understanding and
\nanalyzing the petroleum system in the Gaspé Peninsula helped in improving the evaluation of
\nhydrocarbon potential from surface data, well data and 1D and 2D basin modeling. Following this
\nprogram, the main objective of this thesis is to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential in 3D of the study
\narea known as the Bourque zone in north-eastern Gaspé Peninsula. To achieve this objective, it was
\nnecessary to define a working method which consists of several steps starting from seismic
\ninterpretation to saturation simulation
\nSeismic interpretation was used to determine the geometry of the basement and the extension of two
\nmajor faults: the Bras Nord-Ouest fault and the Third Lake fault, and has been implemented for the
\nfirst time with the verification of these interpretations in a 3D environment. These two deep-seated
\nfaults are located in the Cambro-Ordovician units under the Siluro-Devonian basin. The structure of
\nthe basement describes a fold and thrust belt style.
\nA structurally restored cross-section is used to validate the seismic interpretation and to determine
\nthe kinematics of the deformation. Therefore, shortening measured on the Forillon Formation
\naproximated 9 %, which is close to the total tectonic shortening of the area which lies between 5
\nand 20 %. For the first time in Gaspe pinsula, surface restoration was made while checking the
\nresults viability. Surface restoration gave a shortening of 3,8 %, which validated the use of the basin
\nsimulation software that based on backstripping.
\nThe geometric model has helped in improving the localisation of horizons and existing/new faults.
\nThe geometry specifically aided in defining the base of the Silurian-Devonian basin where there is a
\npotential source rock. The reconstruction of the 3D present-day geometry has served as a structural
\nmodel for the basin simulation software.
\nFor the first time, the evolution of basin modelling was performed. The suggested method consists
\nin comparing the simulated and sampled vitrinite reflectance data. Only one scenario was
\nconclusive with the vitrinite reflectance data. The hypothesis of this scenario is: i) a mean heat flow
\nof 50 mW.m⁻², ii) a local erosion of 4000 m in the north of the Cambro-Ordovician rocks at the end
\nof the Taconic orogeny, iii) a Salinic erosion of 100 m of the Gascons Formation, iv) an erosion up
\nto 3200 m of the Gaspé Sandstone Group after the Acadian Orogeny and finally v) an burial/erosion
\nof 3000 m of Carboniferous rocks. This scenario was also compared with porosity and fission track
\ncalibration data.
\nWith the hydrocarbon generation and saturation simulations, we determined that the main source
\nrock is located with-in the Rivière Ouelle Formation, whereas secondary source rocks occur in the
\nForillon and Shiphead formations. Reservoir rocks observed in the simulations are the White Head
\nFormation, the lndian Coye Formation, the West Point carbonate formation located on footwall
\nhighs, the Forillon and Shiphead formations. However the 2 latter formations only generate
\npotential leads in a scenario with the tight faults.
