Abstract
The Cass Street Bridge is a busy thruway for commuters between La Crosse, Wisconsin and La Crescent, Minnesota. After 66 years of harsh winters, the heavily traveled bridge needed renovation. This article describes the renovation, especially the fortification of its underlying support system and the use of moisture-cured urethane coatings to protect against corrosion. The coatings were designed for application with conventional spray equipment at temperatures as low as 20 deg F. Moisture-curing urethanes such as the ones applied on the Cass Street Bridge are surface tolerant, quick drying and ideally suited for previously painted structures.
