Abstract
En el primer cuento de El naranjo, o los c?rculos del tiempo, Carlos Fuentes reescribe la historia de la conquista de M?xico inscribi?ndola en un discurso que afirma y acepta el car?cter heterog?neo de Latinoam?rica. Esta confirmaci?n de la pluralidad cultural de las Am?ricas aparece tambi?n en su obra El espejo enterrado, donde declara que deber?amos llamar el continente de Latinoam?rica uIndo-afro-ibero-am?rica. Fuentes tambi?n postula un imaginado reverso de la conquista, seg?n el cual una patrulla de mayas toma posesi?n de la pen?nsula ib?rica con el fin de imponerle un mayor grado de tolerancia cultural y religiosa. Al final, vemos que dos fallas traicionan su sue?o multicultural: tanto el indistinto uso del t?rmino mestizo como el mismo valor que Fuentes atribuye a la lengua castellana dejan el texto entre la afirmaci?n y la imposici?n cultural.
