Abstract Port economic impact studies have been often accused for lack of transparency and non-meritocratic management of information. In the present paper, a meta-analysis is conducted to formulate a common framework for port socio-economic impact studies (PEIS) by using case studies from Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia. A wide range of variables have been analyzed, based on the frequency they are encountered and their contribution to reliability and objectivity. In conclusion, a common framework is proposed, aiming towards the optimization of future port-related socio-economic impact studies.
