Abstract
This article describes the rehabilitation of Johnson St., the main east-west arterial in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, a fast-growing area. The street is multi-purpose, a connecting highway part of the National Highway System and a truck route. It had two grade crossings with the Canadian National Railway and a high accident rate. Reconstruction required major consultations with communities and multiple agencies. The project included a new overpass, new sewer and water in the roadway replaced, and extensive landscaping and architectural treatments. Among the innovations was a closed-loop interconnected traffic signal system for the 3.1 mile stretch so that signal timing can be easily tailored to different scenarios. Public involvement included a design workshop and citizen consultation with project engineers.
