Es una opinion generalizada que los tipicos sombreros piramidales con escenas de caza de ballena procedentes de Nutka, (Nootka, en ingles), en la isla de Vancouver, asi como otros objetos diversos de cesteria, tanto de Nutka como de otros lugares de la costa Noroeste, estan confeccionados con corteza de cedro. Todos los autores aceptan que las variaciones del color se deben al tipo de cedro usado, de forma que no parece existir otra posibilidad para la cesteria de la costa Noroeste que estar elaborada con algŭn tipo de fibra vegetal. Tanto es asi que hace poco un especialista, al supervisar unas pruebas de imprenta en la que se describian unos objetos de cesteria del Museo de America que solo conocia por fotos, corrigio su composicion material, ya que le resultaba impensable que pudieran estar hechos con alg ŭn otro tipo de fibras que no fuera la vegetal.
