Charlottetown Transit System: A Private Motorcoach Company Runs Public Transportation in This Tourist Town

Abstract
This article focuses on Charlottetown, on Prince Edward Island (PEI), and its transit system that serves a population of 32,000 people, in an area of 26 square miles, and with a large tourism industry. Until 2003, PEI was the only province that didn’t have a formal public transit system; it only had a taxi fleet, paratransit for the disabled, and a bus service for seniors. This article describes how the first transit agency in Charlottetown was started with four buses on four routes and a private-public partnership arrangement with the city. Smaller, 30-foot buses were used and cupolas were added cupolas to have them fit in with the city’s historic look. Emphasis was placed on good maintenance of the vehicles, customer service, and an aggressive marketing campaign.
