Abstract
Alors que le mélodrame se caractérisait initialement par une forme d’ingénuité socio-économique, il s’ouvre autour de 1820 aux réalités matérielles de son époque. De ce point de vue, l’argent joue un rôle important dans l’ancrage contemporain d’un mélodrame qui apprend vite à en exploiter les potentiels narratifs. Arme du méchant ou du traître, l’argent assure rebonds et renversements et fabrique à bon compte cette émotion que recherche le lecteur ou le spectateur. Mais aussi complice soit-il de la mécanique mélodramatique, l’argent n’est pas qu’un expédient au service de la fable. Entre conformisme idéologique et violence fantasmatique, il impose au mélodrame son ambivalence lui conférant par là même une signification voire une efficacité politiques qu’on ne reconnaît pas d’emblée à ce genre populaire.
