Les Rgles pour la description des documents d'archives (RDDA) canadiennes ont maintenant un peu plus de vingt ans et il faut se demander si elles ont bien servi.Les RDDA ont t conues partir des modles bibliographiques existants pour dcrire des publications (RCAA2, ISBD(G)) et adaptes pour la description de fonds d'archives.Les succs des RDDA sont nombreux et leur impact sur la profession archivistique canadienne, profond.Cependant, ailleurs dans le monde archivistique, on a laiss de ct le cadre bibliographique et les bibliothcaires eux-mmes l'ont rvis rcemment; nous devons maintenant librer les RDDA de ce cadre.La premire section de cet article situe le dveloppement des RDDA dans l'histoire des normes descriptives; la deuxime prsente certains problmes poss par les RDDA et la difficult de les rsoudre dans le cadre actuel.Tout au long de l'article, l'auteur effectue des comparaisons avec les normes descriptives cres aprs les RDDA, ainsi qu'avec les efforts de 2004 incomplets et non-adopts pour rviser les RDDA comme les RDDA2.En conclusion, l'auteur examine brivement des options pour l'avenir de ces normes.La proposition principale est que les RDDA ont besoin d'une rvision complte qui pourrait les aligner davantage aux normes internationales, leur permettre de mieux grer les dfis lis la description des objets numriques et qui pourrait inclure les nouvelles perspectives qui ont t explores dans les crits critiques rcents au sujet de la description qui ont largi la notion du contexte archivistique.
