Abstract

is a policy concept that aims to ensure that the needs of all road users - including drivers, the disabled, the elderly, public transportation users, cyclists, and pedestrians - are considered in road design. is a the forefront of a new paradigm of North American street design, with planning authorities recognizing that the key to fostering vibrant cities is people-based design. The Washington, DC-based National Complete Streets Coalition's efforts in regard to policy development and implementation in Canada and the United States are discussed. Possible global applications and the individuality of Complete Street projects are also examined. Color photographs complement the article.
