Abstract
This article describes two cable-stayed pedestrian bridges that were constructed to carry hikers and cyclists along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The bridges pass over two, five-lane highways. Prior to completion of the bridges, many trail users avoided this section of the trail because of the unsafe condition at the busy intersections. The design of the bridge was a primary consideration of the builder. The park authority wanted a bridge that would appear light and graceful, allowing motorists to view local businesses through and around the bridges. The bridge also has to overcome several design and construction challenges, including meeting Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and dealing with poor soil conditions. The completed bridges feature an open design and at-grade approaches to allow users to access a crosswalk at both bridge locations. Steel hollow structural shapes are used to give the bridge the look of strength.
