Abstract
The 8-mile Confederation Bridge links Prince Edward Island to the Canadian mainland. It is the longest prefabricated bridge in Canada and the longest bridge over ice-covered waters in the world. It was built by a private consortium on a build-own-operate-transfer model and was opened in May 1997. The marine spans were created from 192.5m-long double cantilevers. Each box girder unit was made from 18 line-cast segments. Each girder was placed by the world's largest catamaran, 'Svanen'. The design elements used to protect the bridge against ice forces and freezing and thawing cycles are described. A 90 MPA high-performance concrete was used in the construction of conical ice shields. The area above the highest tide level had an increased concrete cover and was built with an air-entrained 70MPA concrete. The freeze-thaw durability requirements of the CSA-A23.1:1994 standard are outlined. A table is given of the average composition of the concretes used in the marine girders, ice shield and thick sections of the bridge.
