Abstract
In New Institutions, Old Ideas: The Passing Moment of the European Social Ingo Schmidt examines the conceptual, institutional, and economic contexts that have contributed to the decline of the European Social Model (ESM). His paper provides an important overview of debates that have informed the ESM and how it relates to European social democratic strategies. Schmidt provides further critical insight into the practical realities, economic conditions, and institutional contradictions that limited the advancement of the ESM in the context of an enlarged European Union.
