Condition of the PATCO Car Body Structures as Determined During Overhaul

Abstract
The Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) operates a fleet of rapid transit cars in service between Philadelphia and southern New Jersey. The first PATCO fleet of 75 cars went into service in 1969 at the initial opening of the PATCO line. Forty-six additional, similar cars were procured in 1981 from Vickers Canada, Inc. After an extensive evaluation of the fleet condition in 2002-2003, the decision was made to overhaul both sets of cars. The overhaul of the fleet was initiated in 2011. The overhaul includes replacement of most of the car body-mounted mechanical and electrical/electronic systems and an entirely new interior. The car shells, door panels, trucks, truck-mounted equipment, drawbar and draft gear, air compressor, and compressor condenser will be re-used. During initial equipment removal, PATCO elected to have the car shells completely stripped to bare metal, including removal of all accessible asbestos-bearing material. The complete stripping provided the opportunity to perform a thorough evaluation of the car shell condition. The car shells inspected have only minor structural issues, most of which were previously identified during the fleet evaluation. These include corrosion of HSLA plates and corrosion-assisted cracking in dissimilar metal welds. None of these conditions were unanticipated and repair techniques have been developed to restore car body strength and serviceability for the balance of the fleet lifetime. Additional brackets needed to support the equipment of the overhauled cars are being installed using techniques that will prevent future problems of the same types. The generally good condition of these stainless steel shells suggests that, if properly designed, operated, and maintained, stainless steel car shells can be considered for service well beyond their original projected life.
