Abstract
The problem of inconsistent and emotionally unengaged singing by voice students is widespread, particularly in many university programs and by inexperienced singers. I believe the root of this problem stems from educators’ approach to instruction, and perhaps a lack of pre-service teacher preparation. The research examines the student-teacher relationship in higher education vocal instruction. It draws upon several existentialist principles central to Jean-Paul Sartre: freedom and responsibility as they may apply to and influence the student-teacher relationship in higher education vocal instruction (Sartre, 2007). I consider the relationship of the student-teacher with the teacher as a facilitator in vocal study facilitating and guiding freedom and responsibility in learning. Both teacher and student have the ability to determine their essence. The theories were tested in a hermeneutic phenomenological study. Themes were discovered that showed a change in consistency and emotional engagement in students.
