Abstract
This paper examines empirical studies undertaken in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Specific areas for discussion are the assumptions of the disciplines from which the models are drawn and the relevant unit of analysis. Four major classifications of modes in classical studies are identified and it is quite possible that results of studies would be more successful if modal choice were examined separately according to each classification. The classifications are: Evident physical differences; pattern of ownership of the transport mode; potential size of consignment; and abstract mode.
