Abstract
This article reviews the latest developments in commuter rail that include new services to meet urgent needs on some rapidly growing existing operations; sale of new bi-level cars, and a developing market for used gallery cars being retired by Chicago's METRA. The article provides some detail on these systems: commuter rail for Nashville, Tennessee; Chicago Metra's sale of 'retired' gallery cars and Virginia Railway Express' and Maryland MARC's hunt for the used cars; Colorado Railcar's building and demonstration of the first and thus far the only diesel multiple unit (DMU) cars meeting current FRA Section 238 standards. Additionally, the Agence Metropolitaine de Transport in Montreal has ordered 22 aluminum bi-level cars, including 4 cab cars from Bombardier's plant.
