Abstract
This article focuses on Vancouver, Canada, which has become Canada’s largest port and the principal entry port for the Pacific Rim. Scheduled to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, the city is busily constructing two new lines, the Canada line and the Evergreen Line. In the 1960s proposals for a major highway into the center of Vancouver were defeated, and since then planners have concentrated on rail rapid transit. SkyTrain’s 28-kilometer Expo Line opened in 1986, and drove development of transit-oriented neighborhoods. In 2002 a second metro opened adding 20 kilometers and 13 stations to the network. The Canada Line will connect the International Airport, the city center, and the rapidly growing suburb of Richmond. The article describes new funding mechanisms for building this line and the 11-kilometer Evergreen line.
