Abstract
This article presents a snapshot about current capabilities of road weather information systems (RWIS), including the newest sensor technologies that link into warning systems to give real-time information about road safety. Traffic monitors, pavement sensors and weather sensors are linked. There is also a user-friendly interface for direct reporting to motorists. The Web-based system uses easily recognized icons and provides fully downloadable data, which is also archived and analyzed. Other systems are set up to respond to weather changes or to trigger de-icing equipment. Systems in Canada and the U.S. are spotlighted, as well as a U.K. weather advisory program.
