Avec plus de 45 millions d'immigrants en 2005 (OIM, 2008) soit 10,3% de sa population, l'Amérique du nord est une région très fortement marquée par le fait migratoire, hérité de la colonisation européenne de l'Amérique du nord au XVIème siècle, espagnole au sud, anglosaxonne et française au nord, fortement renouvelé à l'épreuve de la mondialisation migratoire du dernier demi-siècle. Aujourd'hui, plus de 10% de la population mexicaine, et environ 17% de la population mexicaine en âge de travailler, vit aux Etats-Unis. Là-bas comme au Canada, les flux d'immigration constituent une composante essentielle de la croissance économique et démographique. En chiffres absolus, les Etats-Unis sont le premier pays récepteur de migrants du monde (près de 40 millions sont nés à l'étranger - près de 13% de la population totale), et le Mexique le premier pays émetteur. Ces deux pays sont liés par des flux de population à dominante sud-nord et des formes d'interdépendance économique et culturelle inscrites dans la longue durée. Le Canada est l'un des pays dont la part de la population étrangère est la plus importante au monde (près de 20% de la population née à l'étranger). Depuis un demi-siècle, les migrations en Amérique du nord ont vu apparaître des profils, des origines nouvelles, et leur géographie s'en est trouvée modifiée. C'est selon ces axes, historicité des migrations, diversification des profils et des origines, géographie des espaces d'installation à différents niveaux scalaires, que s'articule le chapitre. Il conclura sur les enjeux contemporains liés à la construction de sociétés pluriculturelles aux Etats-Unis et au Canada, à la question du développement au Mexique, et enfin à l'élaboration d'une politique partenariale de gestion des flux qui, à l'heure actuelle, et depuis les événements du 11 septembre 2001, peine à se construire. Alors que les migrants n'ont jamais été aussi nombreux, les frontières n'ont en effet, paradoxalement, sans doute jamais été aussi fermées.
