Abstract
This article presents a series of commentaries by railroad executives as they look ahead to 2008 and the reasons as to why the industry is viewed as being under siege. Issues addressed by the executives focus on reregulation threats, hostile shippers, activist hedge funds, softening traffic, and rising fuel prices. following railroads are represented in the commentaries: BNSF Railway, CN, Canadian Pacific, CSX, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific. Also included in this special report are four additional essays: Putting UTU's Tantrum in Perspective, in which the author discusses rail labor relations and the United Transportation Union (UTU); A Higher Hurdle For Getting Things Done. in which the author examines legislation and the threat of reregulation; The 'Benign-Neglect' Era Has Ended, in which the author looks at railroad-related legislation in 2007 and beyond; and, Wall Street's Hopes - And Fears - For 2008, in which the author expresses his views regarding investments in the railroad sector.
