Les lecteurs de la « Librairie allemande » ont déjà pris connaissance de la seconde partie de cet ouvrage monumental, parue en deux volumes avant la première (voir BullMHFA, 40, 2004, p. 443-444).Le livre vient de plus loin : l'auteure a commencé ses recherches en 1975, alors que le premier programme d'enquête collective sur les tribunaux suprêmes de l'Empire débutait, et les a présentées en 1990 pour l'obtention de son habilitation.Autant dire que S. J. a accompagné tout le remarquable développement des recherches sur les juridictions d'Empire, pan essentiel de la redécouverte historiographique du système impérial, et que l'intéressant bilan qu'elle en tire, pour ainsi dire de l'intérieur, se recommande particulièrement à la lecture.De même, la présentation générale du tribunal, de sa création en 1495 à sa disparition avec l'Empire, est un concentré d'érudition (typographiquement, le texte apparaît comme le distillat d'un impressionnant appareil de notes) auquel on aura pour longtemps utilement recours.
