The first edition of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC 1998) includes a section on fiber-reinforced structures (Section 16). The code provisions were limited to applications in which the technical subcommittee had confidence and access to documentation substantiating their field performance. Therefore, the fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) provisions of Section 16 apply only to fully or partially prestressed-concrete beams and slabs; nonprestressed concrete beams, slabs, and deck slabs; fiber-reinforced concrete deck slabs of slab-on-girder bridges; stressed wood decks; and barrier walls. This article presents only the CHBDC provisions for the use of FRP in beams and slabs and their applications, including bridge design, for 3 projects in Canada.
