Abstract
Inventées au xixe siècle, les sciences sociales véhiculent les trois présuppositions suivantes : 1) les phénomènes sociaux se comportent, comme les phénomènes naturels, de façon prévisible (ou du moins analysable) et sont donc sujets à l'intervention et à la manipulation; 2) l'histoire moderne est celle de la "modernisation", c'est-à-dire celle du progrès ou du développement, les traînards n'ayant pas d'autre choix que de rattraper; la société, en tant qu'entité distincte de l'État, est l'unité de base de la science sociale. Cette dernière présupposition rend possible deux options fondamentales : l'une ("universalisation") qui cherche à établir des lois universelles parce que toutes les sociétés sont semblables et l'autre ("sectorialisation") qui refuse toute généralisation parce que toutes les sociétés sont différentes. Contre cette épistémologie de la science sociale dominante se sont développées, après 1945 et surtout depuis la fin des années 1960, des "écoles de résistance" - l'économie historique en Allemagne, l'école des Annales en France et le marxisme (non-officiel) - qui obligent à penser holistique-ment et dialectiquement et aussi à lier la réflexion théorique à la praxis.
