Abstract
Umeek (E. Richard Atleo), Principles of Tsawalk: An Indigenous Approach to Global Crisis. Vancouver: UBC Press, 2012. 220 pages. ISBN 978077482178. $32.95 paperback.Principles of Tsawalk is a thesis about how Nuu-chah-nulth ontology and metaphysics frame the epistemology and axiology of Nuu-chahnulth people. More specifically, it is the claim that the Nuu-chah-nulth way of being and knowing in the world is inherently consistent with respect and sustainability for all people, animals and plants as well as other material and non-material aspects in the world. The further argument is that certain other ontologies, metaphysics and epistemologies are not sustainable. In particular, it is the claim that the worldview of Western industrialized culture has led to the damage and contamination of the world as it exists today. As such, Atleo's book is both an academic and philosophical analysis of differing views of the world and how human action operates within it, but it is also a political cri de coeur for the planet. The dominant culture, it is argued, bases its understanding on a false causality that places humans first and denies the interrelatedness of people, the world, and all its constituent and necessary parts.Atleo frequently acknowledges that there are many examples in various cultures that show a positive vision of the limited and constrained sets of action with which humans should engage to keep the world functional and in harmony, but he utilizes his own culture as paradigmatic of another way of being in and knowing the world. As noted by Atleo himself, his is not a new claim, but the particular illustration of the synergy between Nuu-chah-nulth values and practices is important in itself and also important in providing another voice and critique of the dominant world culture of science, technology and capitalism that continues to result in environmental degradation and economic imbalance in the world today.Atleo's bottom line from the perspective of his own people - a people whose lives are predicated on the relational interdependence of all beings in the world - is that some humans have disrupted the interdependent harmony in the world and that breach has resulted in confusion and chaos. As Atleo puts it, Haw'ilume, Wealthy Mother Earth, like any wounded life form, now seems quite naturally to be in the throes of fighting back, of roaring in severe pain and anger, in response to the behaviour of the human life form. (38) Further, Atleo notes that Western ideologies and radical geopolitical changes are always predicated in oppositional relations among peoples and the planet. Further, such stances are fundamentally grounded in dualism - this over that - win-lose - science over nature - and this political ideology over that. As well, success is generally achieved through violence as one dominant force conquers another. …

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
