Abstract
L'auteur fait un bilan des études récentes sur la mobilité professionnelle et sociale. Cette fois, vingt ans après sa publication avec R. Bendix de Social Mobility in Industrial Society, il peut utiliser d'abondantes données des pays communistes, U.R.S.S., Pologne, Tchécoslovaquie, Hongrie, Yougoslavie. Il constate que les recherches menées dans ces pays font état d'une différence de mobilité sociale selon le milieu professionnel d'origine. Examinant ensuite les résultats des social-démocraties suédoise et britannique, il constate que là aussi les milieux d'origine confirment leur influence, tout comme en France d'ailleurs. Il conclut que, aucun pays n'a jusqu'ici trouvé la solution aux problèmes des inégalités des chances des enfants des classes pauvres.
