Abstract
L’article propose une analyse de l’iconographie du programme des peintures murales de l’église de Poncé-sur-le-Loir (Sarthe), exécuté durant le troisième quart du xiie s. Il s’intéresse plus particulièrement au cycle de trois images sur le mur ouest de l’église, qui représente la bataille d’Antioche, une des batailles les plus importantes de la première croisade. Dans un premier temps, l’article vise à reconstruire la portée des croisades pour les habitants de la région au moment de l’exécution des peintures. Il expose ensuite une lecture du programme qui concilierait deux approches traditionnelles de l’iconographie des croisades : celle qui interprète les images comme propagande de la guerre en Terre sainte et celle qui les considère comme des représentations allégoriques du combat spirituel.
