Da Sterne alla critica dei romanzi inglesi nell’Epistolario di Foscolo

Abstract
La prima parte di questo saggio si concentra sul rapporto Foscolo-Sterne, in particolare sulle prime tracce della prosa sterniana nell’Epistolario e sulla sua successive scomparsa in due periodi particolarmente significativi, prima e dopo l’esilio svizzero e londinese. La seconda parte analizza una serie di lettere del periodo inglese in cui Foscolo esprime una valutazione critica sul romanzo inglese contemporaneo e appare refrattario nei confronti di autori che proprio allora il pubblico sembrava accogliere senza riserve. È proprio questa distanza percepita con forza dal Foscolo nei primi anni Venti dell’Ottocento a suggerire una presa di coscienza da parte dello scrittore di un irrimediabile divario che si andava allora rapidamente formando tra i suoi principi estetici e il nuovo gusto del pubblico.
