Abstract
Dans son recent film 913 (2004), le photographe-cineaste Bertrand Carriere rend hommage aux 913 soldats canadiens qui perirent lors du desastreux debarquement a Dieppe le 9 aout 1942. Il a realise des portraits en noir et blanc de 913 jeunes soldats canadiens qu’il a ensuite deposes sur les rochers de la plage de Normandie ou la maree haute les a engloutis. Carriere dit de cette installation epique (intitulee Jubilee, le nom de code du debarquement a Dieppe) qu’elle est « un monument ephemere, un cimetiere d’images ». Il a par la suite produit la serie photographique Caux dont les images constituent une meditation sur l’abandon et la perte presque palpables que degage le site meme : positions maintenant vides des Allemands, digue brisee, restes de bataille moussus, vagues implacables, lumiere elegiaque. Offrant un paysage encore desole, sature de souvenirs, les photos de la serie Caux agissent comme contrepoids a l’immediatete intense de Jubilee.
